Adopted Matilda Update

To contact us Click HERE
From our adopters:

We just went and saw the specialist at CTVSH and it was great news. He said it's the first time in 22 years he's seen such a turn around case with an infected + broken elbow. He said she was in very serious danger of losing her leg with the infection when he first saw her and showed me pre and post xrays which look like night and day. He said she should be able to use her leg without surgery and thinks she is actually around 8.5 months old now based on bone growth and teeth. She may end up with arthritis or pain later on in life (no telling when that will start) but for now, she's in the best shape possible given her previous circumstances. He said she is doing far better than he could have hoped for. Woohoo! He mentioned how she did not look like she was in good shape when Bev brought her in the first time, but seeing her improve at every visit was amazing to see.

Kiya's Story

To contact us Click HERE
Hi, my name is Kiya (formerly Koko), and I was adopted by a fantastic family. We have a great big yard I play in and explore with my sister Sadie.  I love to play with my family outside too.  They throw toys and I run as fast as I can to catch them.  Sometimes, I get in a little trouble outside because I dig.  When it rains, I found out I can have a lot of fun making a mess of the yard and of myself.  My mom doesn’t think I should be digging but isn’t that what dogs do??  Anyway, every now and then I take a dip into the pool to cool my paws off, but as a pretty girl I don’t go all the way in because I am afraid to get my hair all wet.

My mom takes me to training for obedience.  I’m not sure exactly what that obedience stuff is all about but I act like I am having fun because I get GREAT snacks if I cooperate! Although, I spit out the hot dogs last time because I didn’t like them.
I get to sleep on a great bed and sometimes my mom and dad let me snuggle with them on their bed.  My sister and I compete sometimes for the bed and my dad and mom have to put us in time out! Bummer.
The youngest human in our house is a blast to play with.  He and I run all over the yard together and play inside too.  Sometimes he laughs so hard while playing with me, he falls down and I get to lick his face all over.  I love my human boy.
As far as I am concerned, I have the best house and family in the world.  I sure am a happy and well fed dog.

Mira (Nyx). She is very affectionate and respectful. She's learning to curb herself when she plays with my older, arthritic Lab. Instead of jumping on Sparkle full force, she plays more gently and even allows Sparkle to win most games of tug-of-war. Her latest hobby is hanging out on our deck railing, where she gets a good view of the neighborhood and can smell the prevailing breezes. She has excellent balance and walks around the railing with ease.

Mira is eager to learn, and has nearly mastered the art of sitting politely when she wants something.
She was very frightened of being up on the examining table the last time she was at the vet's, so I've been putting her up on the washing machine to groom her and check her over. I have also been taking her on short trips around town to prevent her from develping any fear of new places.
I would say that Mira's only real issue right now is that she tries to take food from everyone in the family except me. They don't really care about trying to outrank her, but of course they don't like her trying to take their food. As the alpha, I am working on teaching her that it is not acceptable to take food from these 'lower -ranking pack members.' She is gradually improving. Thanks for the work y'all are doing to rescue these sweet animals.

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of Gideon's rescue. It was a great reunion with Gideon, his new family, Dr. Wheaton and all of the staff and Alicia Pet Care Center. Gideon is a complete lover boy! He smiles and wags and demands love from all! He looks great and wears his "badge of courage" well. He has a lot of new fur and some scars but we love the way he looks!! This boy is the image of courage, determination and will. I know that when my days seem rough, I think of Gideon and how strong he was to get through so much! Keep Gideon in your thoughts as he enters his second year of his new life!

Storm just arrived on July 3rd and is working in well with the other dogs and is curious and playful. Name: Storm Age: 1 yr. old approx.

Weight: will be an average size
Mix/Purebred: most likely pure
Housetrained: working on it

Micro chipped: July 6, 2012
Good with other dogs: still assessing but seems to play well with others
Good with cats: not tested yet
Good with children: not tested yet

Storm's training skills are lacking, so we will be working on things like leash training, mouthing and sit and stay. She came to us with LOTS of energy but being cooped up in a shelter can do that to a dog. She does not act like she has had much time in a home. We have high hopes for her since she is very smart and just needs to have some time to calm down and acclimate to her new surroundings. That is our assessment of her for the first 24 hrs. we have had her- check back for more updates about how great she is doing and her progress reports.
If you are interested in adopting Storm, please go to our website, copy, paste and complete our adoption application. Email the application to gsdrescuectx@yahoo.com.

4th of July

To contact us Click HERE
There is always a lot of talk about the dogs that end up in the shelters on the 5th of July and how important it is to keep your dogs safe during this holiday.   What you don't hear so much about is the "clearing and culling" of dogs in the shelters to make room for the dogs who will come in.  The rate at which they kill the shelters dogs is high after the 4th of July, but it  is worse the day before.   It is heartbreaking.
I know someone who has on her email, "For every dog euthanized there is a person responsible".   If you let your dog out on the 4th, and he dies in the shelter... are you also responsible for another life who died so your dog could go to the shelter in the first place?

German Shepherd Mix-Delilah Is Available For Adoption

To contact us Click HERE
Name: DelilahAge: puppy, 4 mo as of May 30, 2012
Gender: female
Weight: 25-30lb w/ small frame, willbe small shepherd
Mix/Purebred: mix with possibly Australian Shepherd
Housetrained: working on it
Crate trained: working on it
Heartworm Negative/Positive: negative, too young
Spayed/Neutered: will be at time of adoption
Micro chipped: will be
Good with other dogs: timid and shy, still assessing
Good with cats: can be trained at this age
Good with children: still assessing

Delilah was originally with somepeople who kept her in an apartment with little to no socialization. Then theapt manager would not allow her to stay. She has not been socialized with otherdogs or people and she is timid and scared. We have worked with dogs like thismany times before and have seen that with time and proper care and training shewill probably come out of her shell and be a great family companion in no timeat all. Puppies are very resilient and can learn very quickly given the timeand attention they need. Puppies in general need lot of your time so be readyif you plan on considering adopting a puppy. Her markings are striking with different colors of sable, red and black. Shehas a smooth and somewhat fluffy coat. She might be mixed with Australianshepherd since she has a stubby bobtail. She probably won't get over 50lbs butthat is a great size to do obedience training or agility or just having a lapdog.
Update:
Delilah still would not approach our weekly volunteer dog walker today but didsneak up to give him a lick before running away. She now needs attention fromothers to get past her fears, but she is making great strides. Delilah could usa volunteer walker every day to help get past her fears and be ready for aforever home. Please consider coming out to take her for walks, grooming, ortaking her along on an outing running errands. She really needs the socialization!

Please email or check back and seechanged we post as we get to know her more. We have only had her in our rescuefor 1-2 days of June 4, 2012.If you areinterested in adopting Delilah, please go to our website, copy, paste andcomplete our adoption application. Saving Gideon!

To contact us Click HERE
He is safe with us now, but he has a very long recovery ahead of him. It is believed that he was hit by a car and then dragged. He is missing most of the skin on his left side and pockets of skin are missing on his right side. His injury is a few days old and therefore there is a lot of necrotic skin. He is resting comfortably under the care of a wonderful vet team. Dr. Wheaton of Alicia Pet Care Center feels that even though this is the largest degloving injury he has ever seen....that with vet care, patience and a lot of love...we can pull him through! His recovery is going to be a minimum of 6 months. We are grateful for the determination, patience and caring support that Dr. Wheaton and his staff have had with Gideon.

Thankful Gideon!

To contact us Click HERE

All I can say is that Gideon has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season!! The shear number of supporters and fans that he has is amazing. Dr. Wheaton and his staff are fantastic and he could not be getting better care. Today, Gideon was full of personality! His spirits were great and he even showed us how much he loves he squeaky toy. His wound looks a little bit better every day. The recovery is sslllooowwww...but definitely progressing. His appetite has improved dramatically and he has a new found energy!

Big Weekend For Coastal!

To contact us Click HERE

As we are rolling into the weekend, I was about to write an update on Giddy and then realized that this weekend is huge for Coastal in general and wanted to emphasize that! We are right on the heals of a double adoption weekend and Santa Paws.

What does this mean? Well, first....it means that my husband will be dressed up as the jolly-old-guy and oh what fun that is going to be....and secondly, it means that we have the opportunity to place a number of dogs this weekend!! With our Aliso Viejo event on Saturday and the Irvine event on Sunday, it is bound to be a spectacular weekend for the dogs. :) For more info on these events, check out our events page!

PS....Gideon is doing great! Baby steps. I have to keep telling myself, baby steps. Dr. Wheaton says we are a 10th of the way through his recovery. Giddy, aka Skinner & Sugar, continues to amaze me with his strength, will and general goofiness!

Have a great weekend and wish us great luck with our orphaned shepherds this weekend.

New color for Gideon!

To contact us Click HERE

Gideon is wearing red this week & it looks so very regal on him. It is apparent from his general goofiness that he is feeling so much better. He talks to anyone who will listen and makes friends with all! He has a new trot in his step and the vet staff has realized that leash-less walking is not going to work anymore! Giddy needs a leash now! This is pretty exciting, considering that when he first came to us he could barely take a couple steps!

Could it be?

To contact us Click HERE

Could it be that Gideon has found his forever home? We shall see!!! Gideon had his first meet and greet and got to meet Toby. Toby was ever so gracious and allowed Gideon to put his entire head in his mouth! Oh, the joys of being a little---or should I say medium---sized dog! (Sorry Toby!) Toby and Giddy hit it off and went on a walk together and wrestled on Dr. Wheaton's back grass! A good day was had by all! We shall see if Gideon gets to go home with Toby---that day isn't too far away!

Gideon's healing is going great! The little island of skin that was growing in the upper section of the wound is now attaching to the outer skin. Good bye Island....hello peninsula! Hopefully this "peninsula" will continue to grow and attach on all sides. Fingers are crossed!! Gideon also has a consult scheduled with the surgeon who would possibly perform the skin graft on the lower section of the wound. Hopefully by end of the next week, we will have a good idea of what that portion of his recovery will entail!

Thanks to all for keeping Gideon in their thoughts---I know it has helped him along the way!

Home Sweet Home!

We got the great news about 2 weeks ago that Gideon was ready to have the surgery to close his wound! No skin graft was needed and they were able to use his own skin--which was very exicitng as this means that Gideon will most likely grow all of his fur back.:) Gideon came through the surgery with flying colors and the best news of all is that he did not go back to the hospital to recouperate! He went to his new home. Gideon has been adopted! Not only has he been adopted, but he is now the proud member of an amazing family that includes Toby (pictured above) and several feline friends. Gideon is one very lucky boy! His transition to a home has been just a little bumpy as he has lived in a hospital cage for 3 months--however, he is now getting into the swing of things and has settled in nicely! Dr. Wheaton and his staff miss Giddy, but I hear they were getting a visit from him today!

Gideon has touched us all and we can only hope to be able to help so many other injured dogs like Gideon! His complete recovery in pictures is here.

Of course, more pictures and updates will be coming......Stay tuned!

I love the comments that have come in on Gideon's blog! The only problem is that I cant reply to them directly. (Unless, of course, there is a trick that I do not know of!) There have been many times along the way that I have wanted to respond to you but without an email address, I couldn't. If you would like me to respond, include an email address on your profile or in your comment and I will get back to you. Thanks for following Gideon's journey--your support has been so valuable! :)

It's amazing to think of what Gideon has gone through and then to see him romp through his new home with his lil brother Tobey in tow! He is one happy dude. :)

Gideon's surgery site contiues to heal and he is already growing fur! We expect that he will be fully furred in no time.

The OC Register had a story about Gideon last week and I wanted to share it with you. The wonderful reporter had followed his story from our initial rescue of Gideon.

It has been absolutley heartwarming to see the number of people who have followed the story of this injured boy and were pulling for him all along! It's a testament to the good will that is amongst us.

Go Giddy!
